2. Volunteer Opportunities at R.A.C.

RAC continues to provide many programs and services to its members and
strives to adapt
to meet today’s requirements, but we need your help to do so. Please
take a look at the following
opportunities and consider joining the RAC Volunteer Team. Contact
information for each volunteer
position is provided on our website but please contact Alan Griffin at
marcom@rac.ca if you need
assistance.

1) Information Technology (IT) and Website Management
2) RAC Operating Awards
3) RAC Field Organization

In addition to its vital role in protecting our spectrum, RAC also
offers many programs and services
to its members to enhance their enjoyment of Amateur Radio and as you
can see from the pages of
RAC’s membership journal, The Canadian Amateur magazine, the number of
programs and services
have been steadily increasing since the start of the pandemic.

These include providing Amateur Radio courses (both Basic and Advanced),
updating the RAC
Contest System and Operating Awards to take advantage of new technology,
and revamping and
expanding the RAC Field Organization to keep pace with an everchanging
and increasingly challenging
global environment.

The list is extensive and it may surprise you to know that the vast
majority of these programs and
services are provided exclusively by volunteers! Yes, I said volunteers.

RAC only has two paid staff: a RAC Office Manager and MarComDirector/TCA
Editor.

Its Board of Directors, Executive, Committee Member, QSL Bureaus, Youth
Program Coordinators,
ARISS Teams, Section Managers and Field Organization representatives and
almost everyone else
are all volunteers.

4. POPULAR SATELLITE DECAYS FROM ORBIT

Satellite enthusiasts have one fewer satellite to rely on now. The orbit
has decayed for the popular
linear transponder satellite known as XW-2A. The satellite was sent into
space in September 2015
from China's Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center. The satellite does not
leave space without sharing a
little bit of glory: In August of 2022, two amateurs used XW-2A to
achieve communication over a
record distance for the 25 kg microsat. It was a transatlantic QSO
between EA4NF in Spain and
VE1CWJ in Nova Scotia, a memorable distance of 4,751 km.

Net Controller — VE3OZW Richard - Mildmay

We need your help by submitting ideas for topics via this forum.  This is a net for all of us.  Help out your fellow club members and net controllers by submitting topics for future nets.  Reply to this thread with any suggestions.

Consider being a GBARC Net Controller (NC).  It is a positive learning experience and great fun.  The only scary part is if your pen runs out of ink while the calls are coming in!  The more Net Controllers available, the less work for everyone.  Currently, we have 4 NC's so each of us has to cover 1 night every 4 weeks.  Imagine if we had more and doubled the number to 8.

Topic for discussion -

1. Power Supplies
    - What do you use?  Linear?  SMPS (Switch mode), battery?
    - Do you or have you used a computer or server power supply?
    - Do you have a back up supply?
    - What are your thoughts?

2. Open Mic is always an option.

4. via HACKADAY: Exploring the Early Days of QRP Radio

QRP initially meant something akin to “you are overloading my receiver,
please reduce
transmitter power” but now means “operating radios at extremely low
power levels”.
There’s been some debate in the amateur radio community over the years
over what power level
constitutes a QRP operation, but it’s almost certainly somewhere below
100 watts, and while the
radios in this video have varying power levels, they tend to be far
below this upper threshold, with
some operating on 1 watt or less. There are a few commercial offerings
demonstrated here, produced
from the 70s to the mid-80s, but a few are made from kits as well. Kits
tended to be both accessible
and easily repairable, with Heathkit being the more recognizable option
among this category. To
operate Morse code only requires a single transistor which is why kits
were so popular, but there
are a few other examples in this video with quite a few more transistors
than that. In fact, there are
all kinds of radios featured here with plenty of features we might even
consider modern by today’s
standards; at least when Morse code is concerned.

The crude carbon rod microphone was invented by David Edward Hughes in 1878 and was instrumental in the development of telephony. These devices used the variable electrical resistance of carbon under pressure between metal plates to translate airborne sound waves into an electrical signal.

2.  FCC Proposes Changes to 60-Meter Band

The FCC issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on April 21, 2023,
that deals with the 60m band. In a prior petition, ARRL urged protecting the
existing use of the band by amateurs when adding a new allocation adopted internationally.
Currently, radio amateurs in the US have access to five discrete
channels on a secondary basis, limited to an effective radiated power (ERP) of 100 W PEP.
The FCC proposes to allocate 15 kHz of contiguous bandwidth between
5351.5 - 5366.5 kHz on a secondary basis with a maximum power of  9.15 W ERP. This
allocation was adopted at the 2015 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-15).
ARRL said that years of amateur radio experience using the five discrete
channels have shown that amateurs can coexist with primary users at 5 MHz.. "Neither ARRL,
nor, NTIA, is aware of a single reported instance of interference by a radio amateur
operating at 5 MHz to date."
The Commission wrote, "Finally, we note that Canada has essentially
implemented the same rules as ARRL has requested."
The FCC proposed to allocate the 15 kHz bandwidth, but stopped short of
making a proposal on whether the existing channels should remain allocated to amateur
radio and what the power limitations should be. They requested comments on their proposal.

4.  Indian Researchers Develop Micro-Supercapacitor

Scientists in India say that they have created the smallest
micro-supercapacitor to date, developing it out of two-dimensional materials: graphene and molybdenum
disulfide.
This is considered significant because as electronic devices continue to
shrink their energy storage devices must be just as small. Supercapacitors are considered
ideal for this task because they not only store energy but can handle the kind of rapid
charge-discharge cycles beyond the ability of conventional chemical batteries.

Researchers used two-dimensional materials for the
ultramicro-supercapacitor because they are semiconductors. Each of the multi-layer electrodes acts as a
field-effect transistor.  The tiny device has a remarkably high capacitance and an easy ability to
integrate with electronic chips because of its use of a gel electrolyte instead of a
liquid.  Their next challenge is to create devices out of other two-dimensional
materials in an attempt to boost capacitance even further.
