Net Controller — VE3OZW Richard - Mildmay

We need your help by submitting ideas for topics via this forum.  This is a net for all of us.  Help out your fellow club members and net controllers by submitting topics for future nets.  Reply to this thread with any suggestions.

HELP WANTED, please apply within!  Consider being a GBARC Net Controller (NC).  It is a positive learning experience and great fun.  The only scary part is if your pen runs out of ink while the calls are coming in!  The more Net Controllers available, the less work for everyone.  Currently, we have 4 NC's so each of us covers 1 night every 4 weeks.  Imagine if we had more and doubled the number to 8.  It's a lot of fun and we are available to help anyone that is willing to step up and try.

Topic for discussion -

1. QSL cards - Do you have one?  Do you reply?  Do you use the QSL bureau?
2. How do you power your ham radio equipment?  Power supply?  Linear or switching mode or battery?
3. Open Mic

RAC Ontario Sections Bulletin for July 8, 2023

This is V_3___, Official Bulletin Station for Radio Amateurs of Canada
with this week's bulletin.

NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1.  Attendance Gain At Ham Radio Friedrechshafen 2023.

This year's attendance at Ham Radio, Europe's largest Hamfest, was up by
10% to 11,100 and the
number of vendors by 15% compared to last year.
While there were no new major radio announcements - other than we
already know of from
Hamvention - it was good to see Kenwood back with a stall but a shame
that only Yaesu's agents
represented them. ICOM was there with their usual impressive large
display area and competing
in size was a new company to the amateur radio market - Aaronia a
manufacturer of high quality
test equipment.

2.  FCC to Consider Keeping FM6 Radio for Low Power TV

It is shaping up to be a busy month for the Federal Communications
Commission, which is considering
whether low power analog TV stations that have a Channel 6 allocation
can continue to broadcast
analog FM radio.
In 13 US markets, FM broadcast audio has long been available from TV
stations making use of a
subcarrier 250 kHz from the top of the Channel 6 frequencies. At the
FCC's meeting on July 20th,
the FCC will look at an option it favors: permitting these low-power TV
stations to continue this
practice as a supplementary service even after the TV stations'
conversion to digital.
FM6 radio is permitted to operate only on 87.75 MHz and the service may
only be offered within the
low-power TV station's coverage area and on a non-interference basis.

3. Clipperton Island Dxpedition to Include Satellite

In case you've marked your calendar for January 2024, hoping to make
contact with the
Clipperton Island DXpedition, there's extra good news if you are a
satellite enthusiast.
When the Perseverance DX Group call QRZ next January from Clipperton
Island, they'll have
an extra way to make contact. The team announced that the TX5S
DXpedition will include satellite
operations. The team's satellite station manager, Andreas N6NU, reported
in a recent press release
that the team hopes to use the IO-117 GreenCube satellite, which not
only has a generous footprint
over the island but has passes that last more than an hour.
The uninhabited atoll in the eastern Pacific Ocean will be home for the
team for 16 days as they
use SSB, CW, RTTY and FT8. This is the 38th most wanted DX according to
Clublog - and it is
IOTA NA-011.
-- Neil Wrap WB9VPG via Amateur Radio Newsletter.

4. Morse Code is thriving in amateur radio, 24 years after last
commercial use

On July 12, 1999, The final message sent in Morse code for commercial
use was the same one that
Morse hammered out on his telegraph key 155 years earlier in 1844, which
was, "What hath God
wrought?" But this time the message was followed by SK, meaning silent
key, or deceased.
The International Maritime Organization replaced Morse code with the
Global Maritime Distress and
Safety System -- an automated system that use satellites and/or
terrestrial radio systems with digital
selective calling technology. Morse Code is also still used in aviation.
Pilots listen to a Morse code
identifier to verify that their navigation receivers are tuned to the
correct radio aid, such as a VHF
Omni-Directional Range (VOR) or Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach
guidance system.
Railroads stopped using Morse code in the mid-1970s. While Morse code is
no longer used
commercially, it is still an integral part of amateur radio. Amateur
radio operators are no longer
required to learn Morse code to obtain their license, but many learn the
code on their own or by using
study guides and taking classes. Every day, amateurs around the world
use Morse code to communicate
with each other, test their radio equipment, or pass along friendly
information. Morse code is essential
in helping people communicate during disasters and emergencies because
of its ability to penetrate
adverse weather issues and propagation disturbance.

  Canada Day 2023
Posted by: Adam_VE3FP - 2023-07-01, 22:11:53 - Forum: Contesting - No Replies

Another day to the history books.

Canada Day Contest was a little disappointing this year. Our sun had lot to do with that. It has been very active, every few days we had radio blackouts in different parts of the world making communications on HF bands difficult.

This year I only managed to get 335 QSOs compared to 2020 over 600. The highest number I worked was over 800 near the end  of the contest. Canadian stations don't use number in the exchange so won't know how Canadians did till the results are published sometime next year.

Here are my results:
Operating time: 8 hrs 11min Operating Mode: All Band, CW (22-28wpm),  Low Power < 100 watts

2.  WRTC 2022 (delayed by 1 year) to be held July 8th - 9th, 2023

A sub-contest for WRTC "hunters" with awards for non-WRTC competitors
was just announced.
See the rules at the link below. In a first, all competing stations will
be spotted automatically by the
organizers, SSB as well as CW, so it should be relatively easy to find
the special stations.
Logs and all sorts of real-time information will be available on the
website in almost real time.
Etiquette: no competitor is allowed to say anything that may identify
themselves. It is strongly suggested
that you DO NOT greet by name or show recognition even if you recognize
a voice on SSB. Doing so
robs the competitor of seconds when seconds count, and the competitors
are prohibited from
acknowledging you in any fashion. Just a quick report is the best
response.  Note that a referee is present
and listening at all times, as well as recordings being made for later
checking. The operators will have
unique callsigns and are supposed to remain anonymous until identified
on the website shortly after
the contest.
Finally, WRTC requests that you PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR LOG IMMEDIATELY to
ARRL for
the IARU Championship. A link for this purpose is on the WRTC webpage.
WRTC log checking
commences immediately after the contest and the results are announced
the next evening (afternoon
on East Coast USA), so your log is needed ASAP for cross-checking.  The
judging committee will
have access to logs submitted through the normal ARRL process. Your log
will be used for checking
the competitors’ logs. Your own log checks will be done by ARRL for the
IARU Championship using
their normal process.
View the WRTC2022 website for award rules and categories, announcements
about live streams,
and all other information as it becomes available:
