VA3RAC in Kincardine, August 12, 2017

Post by VE3PCP » Sat Jul 29, 2017 7:19 am

Hi fellow hams:
I have requested and received permission to use VA3RAC on August 12, 2017 at the special event being held in Kincardine at Station Beach.
Our son in on the Kincardine Youth Advisory Council and they are having a Beach Bash on Sat Aug 12 in celebration of International Youth Day.
As we are already going to be there and have my enclosed event trailer, I decided to set up a special event station to celebrate International Youth Day.
After doing research, it seems we may be the lone station celebrating the day which is both good and bad. Good as every revolution begins with 1 action. Bad that more are not using the opportunity to get youth involved, even though there are many other happenings throughout the year involving youth and ham radio.

I will be running a single HF rig with a mobile antenna for 40M and 20M mounted to my enclosed event trailer. (Happens to be a classic TS520 that I will be running)
I will also have a 2M rig with a mobile antenna as well. Probably put it on a mast to improve coverage as we will be on the beach.
My intent is to operate on 20M and 40M phone as well as monitor local repeaters and 146.52 simplex on 2M.
40M from 7.15 to 7.20 Mhz
20M from 14.150 to 14.250 Mhz.
2M – 146.52 Simplex
2M Repeaters
VE3TIV – 146.610 Kincardine (No Tone)
VE3OBC – 146.910 Goderich - tone 123.0
VE3RTE – 146.730 Paisley – Tone 156.7 (Also linked to VE3OSR on 146.940 – Tone 97.4 and maybe others as well)

I wanted to extend an invitation to other area hams to participate either with a contact or if you are in the area, drop by and sat hello, maybe take a turn at the mike of take down a few log entries!

Alan Griffin the TCA Editor is going to be helping with spreading the word and doing a follow up article for an upcoming TCA edition.

Thanks in advance!

Rob.
I will be on 20 metres between 1700-1830 Z on a summit in Alberta. I would be more than happy to try and make a contact with you.

That sounds good. I installed the 20M Hustler antenna on the trailer last night. Looks like I wil be able to operate between 14.175 and 14.225 pretty comfortably.
Hopefully the conditions will be good.

I also installed a 40M stick on the opposite side of the trailer so I can operate both bands.
The 40M stick does not like having the 20M antenna there but the 20M is not effected by the 40 M.
Was hoping not to have to take one off to use the other but looks like I will if I want to operate on 40.

Tested the physical location on Monday.
Looks like it will work fine for us.
Ham set up worked well too. Although I have to switch rigs. My TS520 gave up the ghost, power supply issues so will be using my TS850 instead.
Carson, VE3OSO will be coming down to join us as well.
I have a sched set up with my brother John, VE7NI in Kamloops at 2 PM our time on 14.140 so hoping the conditions are good!
Thanks and hope to talk with a few of you folks on air on Saturday!

Tomorrow is the day! Weather is not looking like perfect beach day weather but we are forging ahead with the event! All involved with the Kincardine Area Youth Advisory Council have put their best foot forward to celebrate International Youth Day.
Come on out and meet up with other area youth and their families. Enjoy the music, the free food, and some fun games.
As an added bonus, we will have a Ham radio station operating all day in celebration of International Youth Day and Canada 150. Hoping conditions are good and we can make a few great contacts.
Look for the event trailer parked on the access road to the beach.
See you there!

We had a great event. Band conditions in the afternoon were at zero so it made it tough to get many contacts.
I'll be putting together a story tonight along with some pictures.
Thanks to Fred and Carson for coming out to help out and make a few contacts!
