ILLW CA0063

Post by VE3PCP » Fri Apr 27, 2018 8:12 pm

Happy to announce that we will be participating in the International Lighthouse and Lightship weekend on the third weekend in August, 2018.
We have registered the Kincardine Lighthouse and Museum and the number designation is CA0063.
We will be running call sign VE3IHR, Inverhuron Ham Radio that weekend.
Not sure if we are doing one day or both days yet but will be set up in the lighthouse which is open for tours during the summer months.
Anyone that wishes to join us is more than welcome to do so!
The only other lighthouse in Ontario currently registered is the Point Clark Lighthouse and will be attended by the Elmira Amateur Radio Club.

In preparation for the upcoming weekend, I have done some more antenna work and testing.
Built a Mini G5RV from a full size one I had hanging in the shed from my Dad, (SK VE3CRW)
It works surprisingly well actually. Loads well on 10 thru 40 and has decent performance. It also loads up on 80 but I'm sure the performance will be marginal due to it's size. 52' across the top long.
Will be installing it as a sloper as panned for the 40M dipole.
Here are the 4NEC plots for the antenna on 40 and 20.

ILLW weekend is upon us.
We will be setting up VE3IHR Saturday morning and operating from 11AM to 5PM both Saturday and Sunday. Those are the tour hours for the Lighthouse.
I will have my handheld and be monitoring 146.520 for anyone that may be coming over.

Day 1 in the books for ILLW weekend.
Huge noise floor at site though, S8 on both 40M and 20M which made getting contacts challenging. We did manage about 20 contacts, more in the afternoon once the N/A QSO party started.
As always, did some FT8 to see how and where we were being heard. Patterns look good on both 20M and 40M.
Today, I am going to drop the feedline down from the tower and route it to outside. Seeing if the noise floor improves when not using the feedline running down through the utility tower inside.
More later!
