I was looking online at the costs of a separation kit for my Yaesu FT-891. They want $90 so I can move the head away from the base radio. I noticed that the little cable connecting the head to the base was a straight (rj12) 6pin/6wire telephone cable. These are hard to find because of the move away from PBXs (business phone systems). I found white 6 wire cat 3 cable (100 ft) at Princess auto for $6 and ordered 50 ends from Amazon for $7. You could also use ethernet cable and leave out the two extra.
I put one together tonight and it works perfectly. If anyone has the same type of cable connecting their head unit I can make up an extension for you. Lots left over.
