Electronic Parts

Post by va3ts » Thu Nov 09, 2017 7:50 pm

Looking for electronic parts or maybe a bunch of other stuff for your projects? Try this digikey site... the good news is that shipping is by Fedex but shipments to Canada do not have brokerage fees.... my last order cost $8 for shipping.
https://www.digikey.ca/

I recently received an order delivered by the brown truck...my $100 item required another $77 in brokerage, duty and taxes...needless to say I did not accept it .

Thanks to Tom for that info. An addendum to Tom's post FYI:

Ideal Supply is a distributor for Hammond Electronics, and //canada.newark.com. I recently purchased a Hammond transformer through them, 1 week delivery, no shipping charges.

The issue with Newark is that Ideal Supply waits until they get enough orders (>$100) before they submit it. To get around that, find a group of people who want to order stuff that sums >$100. But no shipping charges.

So, I want to build an antenna for fox hunting, the style I've settled on calls for a variable attenuator. Where do I find one?

Attenuator

I have a switch type attenuator...It is simply a series of 10 switches that have resistors that can be switched into the coax in series, each slide switch operates to add resistance to the coax center conductor. The same could be made with a potentiometer (non-wire wound types) simply wired in series with the centre conductor of the coax, maybe with in a nice little box. I measured mine, 36dB means about 175 ohms. A 500 ohm pot may be just the ticket, linear taper carbon type, don't try to use a wirewound resistor.

Give Deals a try, I seen some sliding pots there. Not sure what value they were. I have same kind of attenuator box as Tom TS, works great.

I took a look in my bins but no joy. A 500 ohm linear taper pot is $2.70 at A1 Electronic Parts in Toronto (www.a1parts.com). Real good store with great inventory & low prices, but their minimum shipping charge is about $17 so you need to pick out a bunch of other stuff :-) ... or drop in if you're in the city.

Not sure that I can manage a road trip for the price of thier shipping. . . . I'll have to find another excuse to make the trip. Work them in together :)

I put it on my Dayton shopping list. I'm only there one day but if I see one I'll get it.
