Field Day Final Results - VA3KOT John - 2020-06-28
I finished the contest with a disappointing 63 contacts over a total operating time of 6 hours - all CW on 40m. I used Search and Pounce instead of running a frequency. I usually find S&P works better for me and allows me to copy the other station's exchange before calling them. Some stations were sending at speeds over 30wpm and I had to listen a couple of times to get the info right.
I used the memory keyer built into my radio and set my transmit speed to 22wpm. I found that was a good compromise that everybody was able to copy (even though I received a few "agn" responses).
I operated from my trailer plugged into my home 110V and operated as 1D ONS. It felt more like a regular field day being in the trailer. That also meant I was using my lightweight gear. Logging was on my tablet with a bluetooth keyboard and the HamLog app. HamLog has a Field Day logger (buried in the tools menu) which did a fine job (see image).
I missed the camaraderie of a regular field day. If we had been working as a group out in the field I would have worked more hours and more stations. But what the heck, there's always next year.

Another FD is over for another year. Hope we will operate as a group next year but I still had fun and dealing with antenna issues made it more like FD anyway. First 6 hours was a write off. Had to string a different antenna since the T2FD did not work. Only made 6 or 7 contact in 4 hours so it was time to make a change. It worked just fine when I was camping just a day ago. I will figure this out later. I put up an Offset Dipole and that took up another couple of hours before I was up and making contacts again.
Operated till midnight and started again shortly after 6 in the morning and shut down 12:20. That was enough operating for me.
Band conditions were great even 15 and 10 were open but not very strong so only few Qs on 15 and non on 10.

I entered as "1E ONS", using my nice little Honda generator. Only had time for a couple of hours Sat & couple on Sun, managed to log 56 contacts, all SSB (generator gets me 100 bonus points though!). I was pleasantly surprised at the decent propagation on 15 & 10 with good skip into southern US. I never even heard a single west coast station though. Farthest west for me was New Mexico.
Fun, but the group campouts are much better. Hopefully those are still in our future, someday.

Congrats to Adam for the great score, I did the hunt and peck method and made 101 contacts, it was fun but look forward to next year....

That is a relative term, when some had in excess of 2000 Qs (VE5MX 2353 1D HP 18hrs, AA3B 2913 1E LP 24hrs) but most were between 200 and 1000. There were some but I can't see that being persistent throughout the contest and taking some time to eat and just to stretch out, still it is over 120/hr. I haven't heard really fast CW, most was around 25 wpm. I averaged ~ 44 Qs /Hr .
I just found CW more fun and interesting.
