RAC Ontario Sections Bulletin for July 15, 2023 - Richard VE3OZW - 2023-07-15 This is V_3___, Official Bulletin Station for Radio Amateurs of Canada with this week's bulletin. NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL NEWS 1. Youth On The Air (YOTA) Camp: July 16-21 Youth On The Air (YOTA) campers will be operating special event station VE3YOTA from the camp at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, and the Diefenbunker Cold War Museum in Carp, Ontario. Activation of the VE3YOTA call sign will begin on Sunday, July 16 and conclude at 2 pm on Friday, July 21. Youth will operate the station as they finish projects, between sessions, and during free time. In addition, dedicated HF station operating times will be: Monday, July 17 through Wednesday, July 19 from 2300Z to 0230Z (7 pm to 10:30 pm EDT). Dedicated satellite station operating time will be: Wednesday, July 19 from 1400Z to 1700Z. Fifteen QRP stations will activate a two-for-one Parks on the Air (POTA) location, Central Experimental Farm National Historic Site (VE-5095) and Rideau Canal National Historic Site (VE-4882) on 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m.Weather permitting, the activation will be on the air on Tuesday, July 18 from 1900Z to 2100Z and Thursday, July 20 from 1300Z to 1600Z. The opening and closing ceremonies and the International Space Station contact will be streamed live on the YOTA YouTube Channel. The opening ceremony is Sunday, July 16 from 2100Z to 2315Z, and will feature keynote speaker Phil McBride, VA3QR, the President of Radio Amateurs of Canada. The ARISS contact is currently scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 18 at 1842Z. The closing ceremony is Friday, July 21 from 1500Z to 1600Z. The YouTube channel will also feature a daily highlight video spotlighting the activities of the previous day. Election for RAC Director Ontario North/East Region 2023 Two nominations have been received for the position of RAC Director for the Ontario North/East Region. Following a review of the documentation submitted and taking into account the constitutional and election process requirements, the Election Committee determined that the nomination papers were complete and in order for the following individuals: Frank Maddix, VE3AC/VA3FMM Craig Delmage, VE3OP/VE3KKU The Committee recommended a Ballot by Mail pursuant to Article 6 (Method of Election) in the RAC Constitution, for the Director for the Ontario Ontario North/East Region. Complete biographies of the candidates can be found on the RAC website. Ballots have been distributed to the applicable postal codes from RAC Headquarters. Commercial Interests Petition FCC for High Power Allocation on Shortwave Spectrum The ad hoc group “Shortwave Modernization Coalition” petitioned the FCC to allow data communications on multiple bands within the HF 2 – 25 MHz range with up to 20 KW, including in bands immediately adjacent to spectrum allocated to the Amateur Radio Service. This group appears to represent high-speed stock trading interests. The FCC has assigned it RM-11953. Comments are due by July 31, 2023, and reply comments by August 15. While the petitioners exclude the amateur bands, high power operations on immediately adjacent bands are proposed. ARRL is reviewing the petition. Dual Contests Make for Busy HF Weekend The weekend of July 8 - 9, 2023, was a big one for HF contests. The World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC) 2022 coincided with the IARU HF World Championship. WRTC 2022 Judging for WRTC 2022, held July 8 - 9, 2023, is complete. The WRTC 2022 competition winners are: 1° I44W (UW7LL / VE3DZ) 2° I43C (DJ5MW / DL1IAO) 3° I49D (9A7DX / 9A3LG) Phone: I43L (YU5EEA / 9A3SMS) CW: I47M (F8DBF / F1AKK) Mults: I44W (UW7LL / VE3DZ) Youth: I43O (YL3JA / UR5YKO) Accuracy: I43C (DJ5MW / DL1IAO) The WRTC judges analyzed each log to verify the contacts made during the competition and cross - referenced them to the official records to ensure accuracy. Once the log checking process was complete, the judges posted the winners. All of the logs, the final score list, and a YouTube video of the closing ceremony are available on the WRTC website. https://www.wrtc2022.it Information on the next WRTC Championship was announced on July 11, 2023. It will be hosted by the United Kingdom in 2026. IARU HF World Championship Early numbers of log submissions show enthusiastic participation for this year's IARU HF World Championship. More than 5,000 logs were submitted by the afternoon of July 13. Volunteer operators from ARRL Headquarters staff participated in the event as NU1AW, the IARU Headquarters station. They logged more than 1,000 contacts from the W1AW Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Station during the event. -- arrl news This concludes this week's bulletin.
